Rei grew up in the Shinto faith, and she is a Shinto priestess in training. When she's not at the Hikawa Shrine, tending to the visitors who seek spiritual helpor doing fire readings, Rei can be spotted arguing with her grandfather. However, fans might wonder where Rei's parents are. The answer varies depending on the adaptation.

In the manga, it's mentioned that Rei's mother died during childbirth and her father is a politician who his daughter rarely sees. The live-action series adapts this plot, and it's presumably the same forCrystal. Yet in the '90s anime, Rei's parents aren't mentioned. It's not even quite clear if her grandfather is from her her maternal or paternal side.

In episode 183, it's revealed Rei has a cousin named Kengo Ibuki. He's a ceramic artist who was targeted by Sailor Aluminum Seiren.

Rei'sfavorite food was fugu, but viewers saw her eating pizza and other delicious meals.Despite her hungry appetite, Rei essentially admitted she didn't cook. In fact, she wasn't much for domestic activities like sewing, either. When Chibi-Usa's class was making curry in the '90s anime, Rei was asked to help. Unfortunately, Rei's personal recipe wasn't exactly what Chibi-Usa was looking for— Rei usedpremade curry.

8 Preexisting Powers

Sailor Moon: Everything You Didn't Know About Sailor Mars (3)

Most of the Sailor Senshi don't have access to magical abilities in their civilian forms, but this isn't the case for Rei. Before Rei ever became Sailor Mars, she had multiple abilities that tie to her Shinto heritage.

On top of fire readings, Rei had premonitions and the power to sense the presence of evil like Luna did. She could also wield ofuda; Rei would bless these paper talismans, thenpurge someone of evil or immobilize villains.

7 Her OwnAnimal Guardians

Sailor Mars had two crows as pets who were very close to her and served as her guardians much like Luna and Artemis were for Usagi and Minako, respectively. They were named after the planet Mars’ two moons, Phobos and Deimos.

The two crows were remarkably smart and loyal. Most Sailor Moon fans loved them and even inspired many beautiful fan art.

6 Her Attacks Are Inspired by Shintoism

While it's clear Sailor Mars' element is fire, her attacks are inspired by more than flames. Each and every one of the offensive abilities is based on an aspect of Rei's faith. She uses ofuda to exorcise evil, her Burning Mandala technique reflects her Shinto heritage, and her Mars Flame Sniper move is a nod to Shinto priestesses' archery training.

5 She Dated Tuxedo Mask

Rei Hino’s relationship with Tuxedo Mask divided fans as most people were rooting for Usagi to date him.

Sailor Moon was a little childish at the beginning and Prince Endymion’s incarnation didn’t seem to be interested in her. However, Mamoru Chiba was dating Rei, more or less for a few months.

That was a huge deal-breaker for most fans, but eventually,Usagi and Mamoru became a couple as they were destined to be.

4 She Had PTSD

Sailor Moon: Everything You Didn't Know About Sailor Mars (7)

Fans could not forget Sailor Mars' reaction to Sailor Moon's outburst following Tuxedo Mask's fatal injury in the '90s anime. After the Moon Princess' identity was revealed and Tuxedo Mask was nearly killed by Zoisite, Sailor Moon was overcome by the recent events and had a total breakdown.

The Sailor Senshi were already tired from trying to escape the enemy's lair, so emotions were high. Mars' reaction to Moon's fit was to slap her. Some fans think this was out of jealousy seeing as Rei was "dating" Mamoru at the time. Upon closer inspection, it seems that Rei actually had her own looming PTSD to deal with.

Rei's feelings for Mamoru were deeper than fans realize, and she, too, witnessed someone she cared for, be almost killed. Upon learning that Usagi and Mamoru were destined to be together, Rei also had to deal with the fact that she and Mamoru were effectively over. It took some time for Rei to adjust, which she did quietly out of respect for Usagi's feelings. Eventually, Rei overcame her sadness and her friendship with Usagi deepened.

3 Her Personality Was Differentin The Manga

It wasn’t the first time in anime history to see major differences between the original manga and its anime adaptation. Fans found some differences acceptable, while some changes weren’t well received.

In the manga, Rei was much more reserved and readers didn’t know much about her love life. Anime fans know, it was completely different in the '90s series.
