This World Refugee Day, we sat down with Suncorp Bank Customer Support Officer, Azada Forotan, to hear about her family's experience as refugees.“My family lived in Pakistan for about four years, after fleeing the horrors in Afghanistan. Life was challenging there. We were still unable to attend school and my family were constantly at risk of persecution due to our education," Azada said.“My father was determined to give us all a better life. He set sail on a perilous journey, in 1999, to find safety for our family. My father left behind four children, his pregnant wife and his career as a doctor, to search for our family's future. To this day, my father is my biggest hero."Alongside her mother and four siblings, Azada awaited news of her father. “For almost a year, we didn’t hear from him. We thought something terrible had happened” "Thankfully, we finally received a phone call to let us know he had reached Christmas Island and was one of the first refugees to travel to Australia by boat. For the next year, he was detained on the island before being approved to go to the mainland," said Azada.After six years, the Forotan family were reunited in Brisbane. For her youngest sister, born a month after her father left, she was introduced to her dad for the first time.Living in Brisbane, Azada and her siblings completed their high school education before pursuing university studies. Their mother continued to look after the children while their father worked as a counsellor at the Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma."Living in Australia means everything to me and my family. It is the place we call home. I can breathe fresh air and sleep peacefully at night without worrying about the dangers of war and violence," Azada said.Since joining the team at Suncorp Bank, almost 5 years ago, Azada has helped create a brighter future for others."I am a Customer Support Officer which involves preparing letters of offer and letters of variation to Relationship Managers. I love every part of my role... the team really look out for each other, and we are all passionate about ensuring Suncorp Bank customers have the best experience possible," Azada said.

Suncorp Bank recently hosted a workshop for our #community partner, Financial Basics Foundation, at Heritage Lanes in Brisbane. On Friday, 10 May, Suncorp Bank Branches and Call Centres across the network turned blue for ‘Do It for Dolly Day,’ a day created by Dolly’s Dream to support and raise awareness for reducing bullying nationwide. Our branches proudly displayed Dolly’s Dream educational resources for customers to learn more about the impacts of bullying and the support services available to them and their families. We have a new home online at www.suncorpbank.com.au. Although we’ve got a new website address, we’re still the same Suncorp Bank. The way customers manage their banking online hasn’t changed, and they will be able to log into Internet Banking through the new web address. Suncorp Insurance information will remain on suncorp.com.au
